On Saturday May 11, the Skate Shok and SanMa Boardshop skate teams held a demonstration and skateboarding clinic in Valparaíso for 23 VSP participants from Cerro Mariposa, Cerro La Cruz, and the SENAME center of Playa Ancha who take classes.
Organized by Marco Antonio Bigas Bencini, owner of SanMa Boardshop and Chilean skate brand Skate Shok, the demo event featured Skate Shok rider Kike Leighton and friends of SanMa Boardshop family, including Camilo Carvajal, Matias Chacon, and Sebastian Avalos. The demo started out by showing basic skateboarding tricks and advancing into more technical tricks to show the progress of the sport.
Afterwards, the skateboarders conducted a skate clinic for all of the VSP participants in attendance to show them basic skateboarding tricks: how to push, turn, and ollie. The participants were divided up into groups of 5, which were paired up with one of the sponsored riders and each student received individual instruction from the skaters.
This event is the first step in formalizing the informal skateboard classes that VSP began to offer during the summer months and to advance the sport of skateboarding among underprivileged kids who typically can’t afford this type of equipment. VSP hopes to continue working with Skate Shok and SanMa to develop this collaboration and promote skateboarding among vulnerable groups.
